2-67GHz Noise Parameter System

Focus Microwaves introduces the first of its kind 2-67GHz ultra-wideband coaxial tuner, coupled with the new on-wafer noise module up to 67GHz for direct on-wafer noise measurements. The innovative approach of direct probe mounting of source tuner and noise modules offer improved sensitivity by minimizing RF losses between the Device Under Test (DUT) and the low noise receiver.

Features

Focus Microwaves’ noise parameter measurement system provides a solution to extract accurate noise parameters of a device under test (DUT): minimum noise figure, equivalent noise resistance and optimum noise reflection factor (Gamma and phase). The measurement system is designed to accommodate both connectorized and bare die devices, while offering fast, precise and stable measurements. The noise measurement system, along with its dedicated software (Requires option NPEx), is specifically optimized for the system calibration, DUT measurement, and DUT noise parameters extraction.

Setup

The noise measurement system comprises three main components: the input noise module (INM), the output noise module (ONM), and the noise module controller (NMC). The modules are designed to enhance the precision and sensitivity of the noise receiver while also simplifying the system calibration and DUT measurement process.

Parameters

These are four numbers that fully describe the noise behavior of an active or passive device (two port) at a given frequency. For practical reasons we use the following quantities as Noise Parameters:
• Minimum Noise Figure (Fmin): This is the smallest Noise Figure that the device can reach at a given frequency and bias, if it is optimally matched at the source.
• Equivalent Noise Resistance (Rn): This is a number with the dimension Ohm that indicates how fast the Noise Figure increases when we mismatch the input (source).
• Optimum Noise Reflection Factor (Γopt ), is often used also as Optimum Admittance Yopt: Is the source admittance required for the DUT to perform Fmin ; (Yopt=Gopt+jBopt), 2 parameters.
